Report on 25th ITS World Congress 2018
The 25th ITS World Congress was held from September 17 to 21, 2018, in Copenhagen, Denmark. ITS experts as well as representatives from ITS related companies participated, along with about 10000 attendees from all around the world. There were lively discussions and presentations given around the theme of “ITS – Quality of Life”. The 5GMF booth was in one corner in the JAPAN Pavilion. It showed videos that introduced the state of 5G Trials in Japan as well as an overview of ongoing activities of the 5GMF.

Summary
– At the Opening Ceremony, after greetings of HRH the Crown Prince of Denmark and mayor of Copenhagen, Mr. Yasuo Tahara (MIC: Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications) gave a greeting.
– Session SIS02: Moderated by ARIB Senior Researcher Satoshi Oyama, presentations in this session were given around the theme of “Radio Communication Technologies for Connected Vehicles and Automated Driving”. This session had participants from the ITU-R, the Japanese, US, and European governments, as well as industry representatives. They discussed international cooperation on ITS wireless communication standards towards WRC-19 (Agenda Item 1.12), including the possibility of various forms of cooperation with DSRC, LTE/5G, V2X. Mr. Koji Hara (MIC) gave a presentation on strategies of ITS in Japan.
– Session SIS17: Presentations were given around the theme of “Evolution from current automotive connectivity and ITS deployments to 5G and 5G C-V2X”. NTT DOCOMO Executive Officer Takehiro Nakamura discussed on cross company cooperation, especially the Importance of collaboration with the automobile industry, and the state of 5G and cellar-V2X.
– Session ES03: Centered around the theme of “Essentials for Developing a Smart City”, discussions were held on important resolutions on a vision of cooperation between the public and private sectors and the building of infrastructure in order to achieve a smart city and to improve the quality of life. Mr. Gaku Nakazato (MIC) proposed on the issue of a low birthrate/ageing society, and the keywords “compact” and “network” in terms of the goal of achieving a smart city.
– The JAPAN Pavilion was located in the center of the exhibition hall. The 5GMF and ITS information communication system promotion forum introduced their activities using panel and/or display at each booth in the JAPAN Pavilion.
– During the closing ceremony on the last day of the congress, after the presentations of the best session and best paper awards, the next ITS World Congress was announced. Titled “Smart Mobility, Empowering Cities”. It will be held October 21 to 25, 2019, in Singapore, sponsored by ITS Singapore. As with the opening ceremony, a musical-like performance closed the forum.
